It’s been a year in the making, but I finally cracked open my jars of homemade umeshu (plum wine) a couple months ago, and I am pleased to say that it was sweet with a wonderful sourness, incredibly fragrant and deliciously alcoholic. Basically, summer in a glass.
Umeshu isn’t a drink that’s commonly seen in anime, maybe because most anime is set in high school and minors can’t technically drink on TV… But, I did see it once (ONCE!!) on an episode of Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou, and since then, I’ve been obsessed with trying to make it myself.
Have you ever seen umeshu/plum wine in anime before? Or, have you ever tried it in real life? Continue reading
Maybe it’s the beautiful way it’s decorated, or the contrast of the red strawberries against the whiteness of the fluffy icing and the soft yellow cake, but when it comes to desserts in anime, I don’t think there’s anything more iconic or pleasing to see than the ubiquitous and always classically classy strawberry shortcake. It’s almost February 14, which means it’s that time of year again where we’re all supposed to go and confess to the one we love through a shyly proffered box of handmade chocolates…
But, Valentine’s Day doesn’t always have to be about romantic love, as Azusa from K-On!! shows us in her heartfelt gift of a delectable chocolate cake to her treasured senpai and fellow band members of the light music club! Her strong feelings of gratitude and friendship are baked into her cake, making her handmade Valentine’s Day gift to her friends all that more sweet…. Continue reading
Sometimes you just crave a little fruit in the winter, but it can be hard to find a dessert that is perfect for that time of year when summer fruits and berries such as strawberries, peaches, or apricots are simply not in season…. With the winter holiday season upon us, I thought it would be a perfect time to share with you a classic dessert that not only shows up in various forms in anime all the time, but that also uses seasonal fruit available in the colder months of the year. Packed full of tender, juicy, and slightly tart apples all wrapped up in a crispy, buttery crust, my favorite fall/winter fruit dessert has to be the crowd-pleasing apple pie!
When I first saw these adorable little cookies on an episode of Arcana Famiglia, I knew I just had to make them… Made of two hazelnut cookies with a smear of dark chocolate to hold it all together, these bite sized sandwich cookies offer plenty of crunch, texture, and a subtle sweetness that pairs wonderfully with tea and coffee.
Called baci di dama, or lady’s kisses, because they resemble pursed lips ready for a kiss, these cookies originate from Italy… making them an appropriate little treat to be featured in the Italian-inspired anime of the Arcana Famiglia. Continue reading
Pocky is one Japanese sweet that pretty much everyone knows about. It’s widely available in convenience stores, super markets, and the like all over the world, and comes in an assortment of decadent flavours, from classic chocolate to the more exotic green tea.
Essentially a thin, stick-like biscuit covered in a layer of chocolate, pocky is crunchy, a bit sweet, and borderline addictive to eat. It also has a chocolate-free section on one end that serves as a very convenient handhold that will keep your fingers nice and clean! Continue reading
Creamy soft and sticky sweet, I have always been fascinated by that strange jiggly dessert called purin that is so often featured in anime… But what is it exactly? Well, purin is the Japanese pronunciation of the English word pudding, but contrary to what it’s name suggests, it actually refers to a dessert called flan, caramel custard, or more commonly, creme caramel.
With a thin layer of soft caramel on top, this smooth custard dessert is similar to creme brulee, which is instead custard with hard caramel on top. The slightly bitter caramel compliments sweetness of the custard wonderfully, making for a dessert that will have you coming back for seconds! Continue reading
