Until watching Dagashi Kashi, which aired in the 2016 winter season, I had no idea that there was so much to know about Japanese snacks: the variety of types, the differences in eating techniques, the array of methods snack companies use to capture consumer’s attention and money, one yen at a time….
And, leading the lessons in dagashi was the snack-obsessed Hotaru. Her enthusiasm to spread the good word for the cult of dagashi was memorable and sometimes a bit scary to watch, but always full of passion.
Was this anime just a massive commercial for Japanese snack companies? Who knows. But, what I do know is that there’s certainly an insane amount of dagashi available for consumption in Japan and I would love to try all of them…
