It’s always a good idea to start at the beginning, so I thought I’d kick off the 12 Days of anime with the first meal of the day: breakfast.
Breakfast is definitely my favorite meal to eat, so it’s only natural that I just love to see what my favorite anime characters have been starting their days off with… From standard meals like fried eggs, bacon, sausage, and jam on toast, to Japanese style meals involving grilled fish, miso soup, natto (fermented soy beans), and tamagoyaki (rolled eggs), there’s definitely something for everyone!
In this post, I’ve included images from the following series: Sailor Moon Crystal: Death Busters, Flying Witch, Boku dake ga inai Machi, Bungou Stray Dogs, Super Lovers, Kiznaiver, Amaama to Inazuma (Sweetness and Lightning), and Flip Flappers.
I think my favorite breakfasts from 2016 were:
1. The Western and Japanese fusion breakfast from Boku dake ga inai Machi (Erased), episode 8: I love how it’s a cool mix of two cultures… The eggs and bacon borrow from Western breakfasts, while the bowl of rice, pickles, miso soup, and spinach side dish are clearly taken from a more traditional Japanese meal.
2. The hotcakes from Flying Witch, episode 11: My god… these hotcakes look insanely delicious… The syrup, the melting butter, the fluffy hotcake… YUM.
So, what were your favorite breakfasts from 2016?
What’s your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
What do you usually eat for breakfast (if you even eat it at all!)?

I notice that when I watch anime breakfast, it’s a lot of natto if the character isn’t a cook (or doesn’t have someone to cook for him/her). I guess it’s popular and also because it’s an easy, fast, no-cook breakfast.

Yea, I’ve never thought of that, but I think you’re right! Natto is really easy and fast to prepare in the morning, though I think it’s an acquired taste… It’s also really cheap so students often eat it, too 🙂

It comes in this little plastic packet thingie, they just rip it open and stir it over rice (the rice cooker always has rice in it if you are Japanese). It’s very fast and convenient. The cheapness is also a factor. Plus, apparently it’s considered a health food and if you mix in a raw egg (???) , it’s like the perfect breakfast, nutritionally speaking. Kinda slimy though, hahaha.
