Friendship can be a funny thing, but sometimes you just need an egg sandwich to finally break down the walls between would-be childhood rivals… It’s the little gestures that count, which is why, for our tenth day of the 12 Days of Anime, I present to you the egg sandwiches of Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Your Lie in April).
This is probably one of my favorite scenes in this anime and it didn’t even take place on a stage… and that’s saying something for an anime that had some heart-stopping piano performances. But, what did I like about Episode 19’s egg sandwich scene?
I loved the solidarity that’s shown between these three characters. They’ve all faced down their own battles on stage, and maybe they’ve won some but, in various ways, they’ve all lost plenty as well. On the surface they may appear wildly different people, but inside they all share the same love of music, both pain and joy combined. They’re rivals and colleagues all at the same time, allowing them to understand each other in ways that few others do.
When Arima offers Emi and Takeshi his sandwich, it’s a huge gesture that really brings forward all the things he’s been learning since meeting Kaori. Arima is more open, more genuine and more human than Emi and Takeshi have probably ever seen him before, and the fact that he’s able to connect with them on a level outside piano speaks volumes about how far he’s come since the beginning of the show.
I also like how fashbacks throughout the series show the three as always together but somehow always apart. They’re in their separate worlds, not really communicating with each other on a personal level beyond the music they play. But, they finally break down those walls in episode 19, talking, laughing, arguing, and just being kids… they even forget for a moment that they’re all in the middle of a competition.
And, of course there’s Takeshi, who then goes on from this scene to finally let go of Arima as his “hero”…
And, all this happened because of an egg sandwich.
What is your favorite moment from Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso?
What’s your favorite type of sandwich, and why is it egg sandwiches?
Oh, and can I just take a minute to say that the other foods featured in Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso are also worthy of note. Take a look a few of the dishes showcased in the anime:
